This paper derives from a Plenary Lecture delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America in San Francisco on January 3rd, 2002. It considers some of the larger background to linguistic research on Irish and what the implications of that background are. It also tries to survey some of the theoretical results that have emerged from that work in one domain, the domain of WH-dependencies.
